Knit a Top-Down Mini Sock

Learn the building blocks of top-down sock knitting by making one adorable mini sock!

You’ll begin at the cuff and knit in the round before working through all the essential parts of a traditional sock: the heel flap, heel turn, gusset, foot, tapered toe, and grafted finish. Because it’s mini, you can practice the complete construction of a sock in just a few hours without committing to an entire full-size pair.

By the end of class, you’ll understand how a top-down sock comes together and be ready to use your new skills on your first full-size pair!

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Knitting a small circumference in the round
  • Creating a heel flap
  • Turning a heel
  • Picking up stitches and working a gusset
  • Shaping a tapered toe
  • Grafting the toe closed

Skill Level

Intermediate/Advanced Beginner

Students should already know how to cast on, knit, purl, decrease, and comfortably follow a basic knitting pattern. Previous experience knitting in the round is helpful.

Materials Needed

  • Approximately 50 yards of DK- or worsted-weight yarn
  • US 3–5 double-pointed needles or the size needed to create a firm fabric
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge and finished size are not critical for this learning project. Needle size will vary depending on your yarn and personal tension; US 4 or US 5 is a good starting point.

Needle Options

Double-pointed needles will be demonstrated, but students who already prefer magic loop or two circular needles may use either method.

  • Double-pointed needles: Bamboo or wooden needles are recommended for newer DPN users because they are less slippery than metal.
  • Magic loop: Use a circular needle at least 32 inches long. A longer cable is also suitable.
  • Two circular needles: Bring two circular needles in the same size.

Please arrive with your yarn wound and ready to knit.

Purchasing Materials for Class: Please come to class with all your materials ready to go. If your yarn needs winding, please purchase it and have it wound no later than the day before class, as we won’t be able to wind yarn right before class begins.

Registered students receive 10% off class materials at Stitch & Revel. We’d love to help you choose everything in advance so you can arrive ready to stitch. Thank you for supporting our shop!
