Knit Toe Up mini Sock : Your Next Step in Sock Knitting

Saturday, November 14 | 1:30–4:00 p.m.
Class Length: 2.5 hours

Instructor: Kira Delaney of Kira K Designs

Already tried top-down socks? Now let’s turn things around!

Knitting socks from the toe up makes it easy to check the fit as you work and helps you use your yarn efficiently. In this class, you’ll use a flexible sock formula to create an adorable mini sock featuring a short-row toe and heel.

Because you’ll complete the full construction on a smaller scale, you can focus on understanding each technique without committing to an entire full-size sock. After class, you’ll be ready to apply the same formula to toe-up socks in almost any size.

Skills You’ll Learn

  • Beginning a sock at the toe
  • Creating a short-row toe
  • Knitting a small circumference in the round
  • Using a flexible sock formula
  • Creating a short-row heel
  • Adapting the formula for different sock sizes

Skill Level

Intermediate/Advanced Beginner

Students should already know how to cast on, knit, purl, and follow a basic knitting pattern. Previous experience knitting a small circumference in the round is helpful.

Materials Needed

  • Approximately 50 yards of DK- or worsted-weight yarn
  • US 3–5 double-pointed needles, or the size needed to create a firm fabric
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • One yard of smooth waste yarn
  • Crochet hook in a size similar to your knitting needles

Gauge and finished size are not critical for this learning project. Needle size will depend on your yarn and personal tension; US 4 or US 5 is a good starting point.

Needle Options

Double-pointed needles will be demonstrated, but students who already prefer magic loop or two circular needles may use either method.

  • Double-pointed needles: Bamboo or wooden needles are recommended for newer DPN users because they are less slippery than metal.
  • Magic loop: Use a circular needle at least 32 inches long. A longer cable is also suitable.
  • Two circular needles: Bring two circular needles in the same size.

Please arrive with your yarn wound and ready to knit.

Purchasing Materials for Class: Please come to class with all your materials ready to go. If your yarn needs winding, please purchase it and have it wound no later than the day before class, as we won’t be able to wind yarn right before class begins.

Registered students receive 10% off class materials at Stitch & Revel. We’d love to help you choose everything in advance so you can arrive ready to stitch. Thank you for supporting our shop!
