Livermore’s Downtown Tree Sweater fills our downtown with color, creativity, and community spirit by wrapping trees in handmade knit and crochet art.
As one of the few downtowns to host a celebration like this, it has become a truly special local tradition made possible by the time, talent, and heart of our makers.

Downtown Tree Sweater Stitch Night

I’ve seen the term Fiber Artist used to describe DLTSF participants. What is a Fiber
Artist?
The term Fiber Artist has a long history. For the purposes of the DLTSF, a fiber artist is someone who creates a tree sweater using natural or synthetic materials. Artists have knitted, crocheted, woven, netted, sewn, and glued the body of their sweaters. Yarn, floss,thread, felt, and fabric are all examples of fiber materials that artists have used to create and adorn their sweaters.
How do I participate?
• Complete a Registration Form and Waiver.
• Indicate your first, second, and third tree choices. The Organizer will email you with
your assigned tree and update the List of Available Trees on Facebook after
reviewing the forms you submit.
How are Trees assigned?
Trees are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis as legible, complete Registration
Forms and Waivers are received.
Where can I find the Registration Form and Waiver?
The Registration Form and Waiver will be distributed at an upcoming Information Session. The date and time will be announced soon. After the Information Session, all forms will be available on the Facebook group page or by email.
What are the costs associated with participation?
You are responsible for the cost of the materials and tools needed to design, create, and secure (install) your tree sweater.
What is the fee to participate?
Participation in the DLTSF is FREE!
However, there are costs associated with participating.
What are participants expected to do?
• First and foremost, Have Fun!
• Fill out and submit legible & complete forms as directed
• Design your sweater with families in mind
• Only dress the tree assigned to you
• Design with the understanding that members of the public will touch your tree
sweater
• Choose the theme, materials, colors, pattern, stitches, and design of your tree
sweater. Materials that could harm the tree or break down around it are prohibited.
The sweater you display needs to withstand late-summer heat and late-fall rain.
Please plan accordingly.
• When installing and removing your tree sweater, always be aware of your personal
safety and the safety of everyone with you. Uneven pavement, tree roots,
pedestrians, and vehicle traffic can all pose hazards.
• If you cannot install or remove your tree sweater on the published dates—especially
Removal Day—please arrange for someone else to do it for you. These dates were
submitted to the City of Livermore as part of the DLTSF Special Events Permit
application.
If you have questions about participating in the DLTSF, please reach out to the Organizer. You may not be the only one with that question, and contacting the Organizer helps keep communication clear and consistent for everyone.
What do you share with the community about my participation?
• Registration paperwork is submitted directly to the Organizer, which limits the
number of people who have access to your information.
• On the Registration Form, you will provide your first and last name and then choose
whether you want your full name, first name, initials, or nickname used to credit you
with the tree you chose on the List of Available Trees.
• Forms are kept secure while in the Organizer’s possession. They are eventually
shredded, and the shredded material is disposed of in multiple containers.
I heard that Tree Sweaters are donated to a local animal shelter. Do I have to donate
the sweater that I display?
Fiber Artists may choose whether to donate or keep the tree sweater they displayed. If you want to donate your sweater, the mat portion must be long and wide enough for an animal to lie on comfortably. Sweaters made of wool, or adorned with beads, buttons, or anything else an anxious animal could chew on or choke on, will not be accepted for donation.
Is it true that Tree Sweaters have been vandalized and stolen? What can I do to protect my sweater? While there is no way to guarantee sweaters won’t be vandalized or stolen, Fiber Artists will share their best practice tips for securing sweaters at the upcoming Information Session.
